Luxonis never discontinues products

Recently, I ran into something that you all have surely suffered from:  the product that you’d like to repurchase is no longer available. As a consumer, this is incredibly maddening as switching to either a new generation or a like in kind substitute is fraught with challenges.

This happened to me with a microwave at my house that needed to be replaced. The microwave had custom carpentry perfectly built around it. I pulled up the exact microwave model and it was no longer available. The manufacturer had a new version but the dimensions were different. I researched dozens of alternative microwave models and none of them had the exact same dimensions.

This experience was not just inconvenient, but deeply frustrating. I felt neglected as a consumer, a sentiment shared by many who find themselves in similar situations. It's more than the hassle of finding a replacement; it's about the feeling of being disregarded by manufacturers who don't consider the long-term impacts of their decisions on loyal customers.

Ultimately, I purchased a slightly smaller microwave and then added shims to help it fit into the space. It looks worse than the previous version and when I look at it I’m reminded that when manufacturers discontinue products it creates a horrible customer experience.

Part of succeeding as a business is to take the path of maximum schlep, to solve and improve the things that everybody hates doing. And at Luxonis that ethos translates to our goal of never discontinuing any of our products. This comes with an incredible cost but we view it as well worth it because of how it helps our customers win.

What this means for you as a customer is that if you specify in a Luxonis device you can expect both to be able to order more of the identical model and to receive ongoing support via OTA firmware updates. For example, check out the two images below.

On the top is our first generation OAK-D and on the bottom is our OAK-D Series 2. The products are nearly identical except that Series 2 is dramatically smaller and lighter; they also have the identical price. So why would anybody want to buy the original OAK-D? Well, we have multiple customers every week that choose to buy the original OAK-D rather than the second generation.

Now a common question that we receive is whether Luxonis will be forced to discontinue a product due to an external dependency. We have shipped hardware for more than three years and this has never happened. And based on our current supply chain expectations we don’t expect this to happen at any point over at least the next three years. If Luxonis were to ever be forced to change a critical component then we’d do our best to update the device to be as identical as possible to the old version.
