  • Objectdetection with OAK-1 with Infrared-Light?

Hi VivianPatterson ,
I am not sure, as we have quite some stock at our fulfillment center as well. We use a 850nm flashlight to determine whether a camera has such filters, they are quite cheap.

8 months later

Has this changed since May 2023? I purchased an Oak-1 light and noticed on the product page that it is IR sensitive with IR filters. If so, is the 940nm filter the right one to use?

    Hi Sigi77
Oak-1 lite should perceive IR wavelengths of 940nm. If you want to block out the IR light you need to use a 940nm cut filter.

    Thanks,
    Jaka

      Hi Jakaskerl,

Thank you for your prompt response. I would like to clarify that my intention is to use the camera in a room with low light conditions. To achieve this, I am considering installing 940nm infrared LED lights from AliExpress and a 940nm infrared camera pass-filter in front of the camera. Can you confirm if this setup will work as intended?

      Thank you.

      Hi @Sigi77
Sorry for misinformation, the Oak-1 lites have IR filter which means they won't be able to perceive IR light. You would need a sensor with bandpass at 940nm.

      Thanks,
      Jaka

Are you sure about this? I have a Samsung tv remote and if i press any button i can see the IR light. Or am i missing something?

        Hi Sigi77
That's what I was experiencing as well, hence the confusion. Would expect some devices to have a missing IR filter as a HW issue, but I doubt this is the case here. I compared it to a ov9282 which has bandpass and the difference is very noticeable. I forwarded this to the team to see what the issue is.

        Thanks,
        Jaka

My iPhone 15 Pro takes the same picture. It has an IR filter, and I don't think there's a hardware issue. Maybe the lighting should be brighter and more red?

        Hi @Sigi77
Yes, there is a clear difference. I suppose the some of the NIR side of the spectrum is picked up by the camera despite having the IR filter.
If you wish to have IR floodlights to brighten up the scene, go for the pro version (PY091 or PY097 versions of the ov9282).

        Thanks,
        Jaka

Yes, I am planning on upgrading.

I already ordered an IMX462 with Motorized IR-CUT. I will install an IRPASS filter, and also add IR leds to the setup.
However, I am not sure which option to order:
The first option is OAK-FFC 3P (I won't need the 4P for sure.)

The second option is OAK-FFC RPi Hat. I have an rpi5 with me and I am planning to use it for the setup.

Which one would you recommend, which is more supported with the mentioned setup? I already understood that i need to install the IMX462 to one of the OAK-FFC boards, it wont work from the rPI.

I am a bit confused about the price difference between OAK-FFC 3P and rpi-hat. OAK-FFC 3P is cheaper, but it appears to have a more complicated hardware with a larger heatsink. On the other hand, rpi-hat is smaller in size and I had a hard time finding it on the webshop. I am not sure if it is already deprecated, and I am also unsure whether it will work with rpi5. Additionally, it is also quite expensive. Can you help me understand the pros and cons of each option in my case?

          Hi Sigi77
Would basically be the same. RPI hat works the same as just connecting FFC-3P to the raspberry pi via USB. Is convenience mostly. Performance should be the exact same.

          Thanks,
          Jaka

Thank you! I just ordered the 3P version. I hope it can connect the Arducam camera with the supplied cables. I will keep this thread updated with my progress on a separate link if everything is working.
