  • Why Wide FOV lenses can only be fixed-focus and not auto-focus?

Hi,
I noticed that it has been mentioned that WFOV cameras cannot be auto-focused. Can someone please explain the reason behind it?

    Hi ManjiriNerurkar ,
Great question, I *think * it's because it's due to optics of wide FOV, it would be hard to implement Auto-Focus in such a small package. But you should double-check this information with someone more proficient in optics🙂
    Thanks, Erik

      Hi erik ,
      Thank you for your response.
Just wanted to confirm one more thing: Will the undistortion have any effect on depth information?

        Hi ManjiriNerurkar ,
It will decrease the FOV; you can see on eg. OAK-D W tha mono camera FOV isn't the same as Rectified Depth FOV. There won't be any depth accuracy loss though.
        Thanks, Erik

They could be AF, but wide angle lenses have such a huge depth of field, like, say 30 cm-infinity, that it would actually be pretty useless to implement an auto-focus system. Maybe you remember film point and shoot cameras ? They were fitted with wide-angle, fixed-focus (and cheap) lenses for that reason.
