Understanding OAK 4 S camera capabilities

Hi everyone,

I’d like to confirm whether the OAK-4 S camera supports the USB-C interface for both powering the device and data transfer/programming. (Windows 10 OS)

And also, possible to achieve 30 fps with full res of video quality? (Providing all the required hardware)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey @Chetan_Barker

When connected via USB-C, the OAK-4 will enumerate as a standard USB device and can be accessed through ADB (Android Debug Bridge). This is handy for debugging and development, but it does not support running DepthAI pipelines or tools like oakctl.

Also note: the OAK-4 can draw up to 25 W peak, so powering directly from a computer USB port isn’t supported and may cause crashes. The Y-Adapter is also incompatible due to the high power demand — we recommend PoE+ (802.3at, 30 W) injector/switch for stable use.

Yep — OAK-4 S uses the IMX586 and supports 48 MP (8000×6000) at up to 30 FPS at the sensor level, but full-res streaming is only practical with on-device encoding.

Also, to program the camera from host IPC/machine, I can't use ADB right? this is for just debugging purpose only.

Yeah, taking the full resolution and piping it through the integrated videoencoder. Otherwise the 2.5gpbs bandwidth will quickly fill up.

You can program the camera, but you currently won't be able to run it through USB (to stream images and such).

It’s mentioned that the USB interface supports up to 10 Gbps. Does this mean that from the host IPC I can achieve video transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps from the camera?
(Setup will use a USB-C PCIe card with 10 Gbps per port, following the connection guidelines in the OAK web setup documents.)

Interfaces & DepthAI:

After setting up the USB-C connection, will the DepthAI library automatically detect all available devices and handle firmware and pipeline loading, as described in the documentation?
In that case, can we use DepthAI and its pipelines to communicate with the camera in a similar way as with the Ethernet interface?

PoE Interface:

I’ve come across two different specifications for speed 1 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps. Could you please confirm which one is correct? And also, I was trying to connect camera with static IP address but couldn't connect. Can you please guide me?

Facing connection issues when try to connect multiple cameras. I don't want to use DHCP.

Yeah, the USB supports up to 10gbps (gen2). You will be able to do that, though keep in mind there is always overhead with USB so the effective numbers will lower.

USB will likely support streaming, but I would assume it won't support visualizer (device-side webserver) unless it is also connected to the internet (ETH)..

2.5Gbps. The devices will be updated to support link-local as well, but for now - ADB into the device and set the IP using agentconfd - https://docs.luxonis.com/hardware/platform/deploy/oak4-deployment-guide/#OAK4%20Getting%20Started-Advanced (IP should be in the range 169.254.x.x/16).

Answer:

Yes and no. Our newest devices, the OAK-4 / RVC4, do support up to 10 Gbps speeds. However, with the current DepthAI implementation and OAK-4 / RVC4 devices, we do not support video streaming directly through USB; it is currently only available via Ethernet/PoE+. We are planning to add USB video stream support later this year.

Is there any other way then connect USB C and getting ADB into device? Bcz, when carrying the initial setup of camera during blue light flashing, there is an option for static IP setup. I have used that, and it was unsuccessful. May I know this option I can't use or am I doing it wrong?

Can you elaborate this? I can't use USB C for streaming you mean?

You can do a local setup (https://setup.luxonis.com) and manually set the IP there. Then scan the QR code.

this is not working if I use static IP address option. It is flashing yellow light quite long and after that to red

You can do touch /etc/resolv.conf and then retry. It should work offline as well.

Also, I have tried to update OS to 1.19.x like you mentioned in our call (Emage Vision). It shows no firmware updates available

You need to be in root mode first - that is why you get permission denied.

Ah windows. To set the environment variable there, you can do set ENV=STG. Then run the oakctl command again.
