  • OAK-D PoE Auto Exposure Failures

The auto exposure on my OAK-D PoE is not working properly. I believe it is choosing to set the iso way too high when I point the camera at certain scenes, resulting in dark/noisey/green frames, as can be seen here. This does not occur on my USB OAK-D when aimed at the same scene and running the same code sample. Seems odd since these two devices have essentially identical hardware aside from the waterproofing and the PoE, so you would think the frames would look about the same.

When I manually adjust the exposure time and iso value using this camera control example, the frames look much better, so I don't think this is a hardware issue. But obviously I cannot choose a fixed exposure time and iso if the camera is to operate in a variety of lighting conditions. So any advice on how to fix this issue would be much appreciated.

Wow. Super weird. And thanks for the report here. We're discussing in Discord. Will circle back here as well when this is figured out.

To follow up here, the other OAK-D PoE units I received more recently do not exhibit this issue. Luxonis-Alex in the discord discussion suggested that it might be a hardware issue, so I will do an RMA for the unit. Perhaps a test could be added to your QA process to ensure that the exposure works as expected in a few different lighting conditions for every unit, so this issue would be caught before shipment if it happens again.

tom_built Thanks for following up. And sorry about the trouble. This is quite and odd issue.

We are excited to get your unit back to see what went wrong here.

Oh and also we're brainstorming how we may be able to catch something like this in production. We had never seen such a failure before, so hadn't thought to test this scenario. But we're figuring it out now.

    Thanks again,
