Barcode Reading with Computer Vision: What a Camera Sees That a Laser Scanner Can't
Vision-based barcode reading uses an AI camera to detect and decode barcodes instead of a laser or fixed imager. A neural network finds every code in the frame, including damaged, skewed, and low-contrast labels, then decodes them on the device. The same camera can also measure, inspect, and track what the codes are attached to.
That last part is the reason to care. A dedicated scanner does one job. The moment the problem gets messier, when you need box dimensions, label verification, or tracking alongside the read, you end up bolting more hardware onto the line. We built our Barcode & Label Reading solution to collapse that stack into one OAK camera.
How does vision-based barcode reading work with Luxonis?
A neural network runs directly on the camera and detects every code in the frame: 1D barcodes, QR codes, DataMatrix, etc. Detection can run fully on-device at up to 480 FPS, so there is no cloud round trip and no frame grabber PC. Once a code is localized, it gets decoded in the same pipeline, in real time, with no post-processing step.
For small codes on fast-moving packages, the pipeline uses QR tiling: the frame is split into tiles so distant codes still resolve at decodable resolution. That is how one camera covers a wide conveyor instead of a bank of fixed readers each staring at its own slice.
Luxonis Barcode Reading vs. Traditional Barcode Scanners
Fixed scanner
- Well over 5 figure cost
- No depth and dimensioning
- Separate hardware for inspection & tracking
- Closed software ecosystem
OAK vision system
- ~$1,000 each
- Built in depth and dimensioning capabilities
- One device, multiple functionalities
- Open-source Depth AI ecosystem
The cost argument is coverage. Multi-point scanning with fixed readers means buying, mounting, and maintaining a reader per point. One openly programmable OAK camera covers the same span and leaves you room to add inspection or dimensioning later in software rather than in purchase orders.
Standalone Operation, and Why It’s Important
The solution ships on OAK 4 hardware and picks the sensor to match the line. OAK 4 S brings 48MP resolution for dense label fields. OAK 4 D adds stereo depth for dimensioning alongside the read. OAK 4 CS takes interchangeable CS-mount optics (10-50mm zoom) for long or unusual working distances. A 5MP global shutter option keeps fast-moving items sharp. Our OAK 4 line will be IP67 and have PoE or USB connectivity, allowing us to adapt to your environment.
Typical deployments: conveyor and sortation lines, pack-out verification, inventory and shelf auditing, package dimensioning, and AMRs that need to read codes while moving.
This is just the tip of the iceberg that we have seen with our industry leading edge-capability. Check out some more of our industry specific solutions here.
Want to get started?
At Luxonis, we have just released the early access of our Barcode Reading solution. This is in customers hands now and being tested in various environments. The app can be dropped onto your OAK 4 device and run side by side with your other inspections, or it can be downloaded and run independently. Flexible and more than capable, to fit into your exact application.

FAQ
What barcode types does it read? 1D barcodes, QR codes, and DataMatrix, including multiple code types in the same frame.
Does it need a cloud connection? No. Detection and decoding run on the camera. Nothing leaves the device unless you want it to. Enabled by the OAK 4 edge inference capabilities with 52 TOPS of processing power.
Can it read codes on moving packages? Yes. On-device inference runs at up to 480 FPS, and QR tiling keeps small, distant codes decodable at line speed.
Can one camera replace multiple fixed scanners? Usually. A wide field of view plus multi-code detection covers spans that would otherwise take several fixed read points.
What if I also need dimensions or inspection? Depth sensing, dimensioning, defect detection, and tracking run on the same device, so those are software additions, not new hardware.
What connectivity options are there? The majority of Luxonis cameras have both PoE and USB connectivity, with the added functionality of our M8 WiFi adapter, you can also interface over your network.
Can I mount this on a Forklift? Absolutely. Luxonis OAK cameras are designed to be multi-functional. Need to guide an AMR/forklift and check shelf inventory, as well as scan product codes? This is what our camera is meant for.
How does this compare to industrial barcode readers? Industrial barcode readers are great at their only job, reading codes. If you need to do other inspections, you are boxed in. Luxonis OAK cameras are designed to handle multiple tasks.
Can this be integrated into my current project? Definitely! The Luxonis Barcode Reading Solution is able to be dropped into your current pipeline and run side by side with inspections you have already developed.
How does the unit get powered? Luxonis cameras can be powered by PoE or USB, the options are flexible dependent on your application's needs.
