OAK-4-D-Pro not detected

Hi everyone,

I’ve just received my OAK-4D Pro camera along with a USB-C to USB-C USB 3 cable and I’m trying to get it running on my MacBook Air for a quick test with the viewer.

When I plug the camera in, I see two red flashes, then they stop, and after that I get a steady blue flashing light continuously. From what I understand, that suggests the device is powered and running. My Mac also detects that something is connected over USB-C and the camera seems to be receiving power.

I installed the latest viewer version (1.6.3), but the device does not show up in the viewer at all.

Is this likely due to using USB-C directly? Do you recommend a different connection method or additional drivers/setup steps on macOS? I’d strongly prefer to keep using USB-C since I don’t have a PoE switch available.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hey hugocntt - the behavior you're seeing is expected for the OAK-4D Pro when powered via USB-C, but unfortunately, running DepthAI applications (including the OAK Viewer) over USB-C is currently not supported for OAK4 devices.
Currently the OAK4 series is designed to operate primarily over Ethernet (PoE+), and the USB-C port is for now intended for power delivery and certain maintenance tasks(ADB), not for direct data streaming or DepthAI pipeline execution.
We are working on enabling USB-C for everything but it is not ready yet.

Ok, I understand, thanks for the clarification.

Would you say the easiest setup is to connect the OAK-4D Pro directly to a Raspberry Pi using a PoE cable? Or do I still need to buy a PoE switch and connect everything to the internet as shown on the website?

I’m only using one camera and would like to go with the simplest possible connection method.

hugocntt no that won't work, since Raspy doesn't supply enough power.
The easiest is to buy PoE injector or some cheap PoE-powered switch that is PoE+ (802.3at, 30W).

That would be a good fit yes, but you still need to plug it into something. It really depends on what you want to do with the device. We normally suggest using PoE switch like this one, since it is most versitaly and you can aditionall connect internet to it and then you can connect it to the Hub...

Thank you for the excellent recommendation! I will buy a similar PoE switch as you suggested.

With my team, we're essentially building an autonomous tractor where the OAK-4 D Pro camera will be used for obstacle avoidance along with environment mapping. We want the camera to send processed information into our mechanical control system, which will go through a Pixhawk flight controller.

I just received the camera and wanted to test it out and start trying to run some models to see how it works. I really appreciate your input and expertise!

From what I understand, we will connect the camera to the switch, then connect the switch to a router, and then to my laptop - and we should be able to access both the OAK Viewer and the Luxonis Hub, right? Thanks a lot!

I would really appreciate it if maybe you had time for a quick online meeting where we could potentially discuss so I understand a bit more about how to use it optimally for our tractor project. Let me know if that would be a possibility. Really appreciate everything!

hugocntt - yes, that way you will have both Hub and OAK Viewer available.

I think, firstly, it's best you check out our docs and our chatbot which is really useful for starting and then our github where, you will find premade examples for OAK. Then, if you still have questions, we can do a quick online meeting, yes.

Thanks for the guidance, I’ll go through the docs, the chatbot, and the GitHub examples and work on it a bit on my side first. I’ll let you know if I run into any issues or need clarification.
