I'm surprised to see that the device can only manage about 15FPS. I'm using macOS. Any chance you are using a slow USB cable? Pretty sure you can get 50+ FPS.

Don't think so. I've tried a couple USB-C cables with the same results. I can get 30FPS with 640x480. But 60FPS is not achievable (I get 40-50 in that mode).

Is this the correct way to rapidly acquire color frames? Or should I be using video mode? I'm a bit confused between video and preview sizing. I would like to get uncompressed RGB as fast as possible.

Well, if you are using the same resolution, then video will be faster since it is NV12 (as opposed to RGB) and precedes the creation of preview frame. (raw->isp->video->preview).
