At Luxonis we began our journey with the original OAK-D that brought our Robotic Vision Core 2 to the world with it’s on-board artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision. While the OAK-D performantly delivered for your spatial AI applications, it left room for significant improvement when it comes to industrial and mechanical design. The OAK-D was much larger than it needed to be, contained a separate barrel jack, and had thermal fins that could have been used for sailing across the Atlantic.
With our introduction of our Series 2 of products in 2022 we dramatically improved the industrial and mechanical design. Specifically, the form factor was dramatically reduced, the thermal design size was streamlined, and we started using only a USB port for both power and connectivity. Additionally, we expanded our lineup of industrial designs to include our PoE models that utilize an M12 connector for both power and connectivity. These designs also are IP65 rated which includes testing for dust, rainfall, and complete water submersion.
What we hear from our customers over and over is the need for our hardware to withstand extremely harsh conditions with products being used in extreme temperatures such as in the sun of Arizona summers or the camp jobs of Northern Canada. Our products are commonly used continuously 24/7/365 in outdoor environments that also include being under water, in high humidity / salinity areas, in factories, on farms, and even in outer space.
This customer feedback has led us to expand our industrial design and mechanical engineering teams to better understand and improve our hardware for our customers. A new improvement that was just completed as that our OAK-D Pro (USB design) is now IP66 rated!
Another area of harsh conditions is when our hardware is subjected to vibration such as one drones, on vehicles, and in factories. In these conditions we recommend using our fixed focus variants (see here) and if needed we also have global shutter variants which are helpful for certain high-speed scenarios. And we are now happy to share that our popular OAK-D POE (Series 1 and Series 2) and OAK-D (Series 2) devices have passed vibration tests as set forth by EN 60068-2-6:2008 and ISO 15998:2008 Clause 7.2.3 Table 1.
You can learn more details about the vibration testing here.
Testing was completed at a third party laboratory named SIQ.
Also, stay tuned for our Series 4 of products launching in June 2024; these devices will be both IP67 rated, and each device will have the option to connect with USB or Ethernet.
